Front Clears Out, Cooler & Breezy Behind It — Dry Stretch Ahead

Good morning. The last of the lingering showers slide off the Lower Shore and out to sea early today as a cold front — the same one NWS Baltimore/Washington (issued 3:00 AM) and NWS Mount Holly (3:16 AM) have been tracking overnight — finishes its crossing of the state. Behind it: drier air, a stiff westerly breeze, and a genuinely pleasant, low-humidity stretch that holds right through Tuesday. Wakefield’s office (5:48 AM) confirms the drying trend extends down toward the lower Shore too. Enjoy it — this is about as comfortable as Maryland August gets.
Timing At A Glance
- Early morning (now–9 AM): Patchy fog possible in the Frederick/Carroll valleys and along the Potomac; a few lingering light showers exit the Lower Eastern Shore and Ocean City vicinity.
- Mid-morning to midday: Cold front pushes through central and eastern Maryland. An isolated strong storm can’t be fully ruled out ahead of it over the DC-to-Bay corridor, but organized severe weather is unlikely.
- Afternoon: Skies clear out west to east, winds pick up out of the west/northwest at 10-20 mph with gusts, humidity drops noticeably.
- Evening into tonight: Clear and comfortably cool, breezy at times, especially over the western ridges and the Bay.
Region By Region
Western Maryland
Garrett County (Deep Creek/Oakland): High near 68° under mostly cloudy-to-isolated-shower skies, upslope flow off the Appalachians keeping a light shower chance (17%) alive through the day. West wind around 12 mph. Overnight lows dip to near 51° — genuinely chilly for late August, grab a light jacket if you’re lakeside after dark. Allegany County (Cumberland): Sunnier and warmer, high around 78°, just a 5% shower chance, breezy west winds gusting into the low teens. Lows near 57° tonight.
Northern & Central Maryland
Washington County (Hagerstown): A sunny, dry day, high around 81°, essentially no rain chance once the front clears early. Winds west 3-12 mph. Lows near 58° tonight — sleep-with-the-window weather. Frederick & Carroll Counties: Patchy fog possible at daybreak, otherwise sunny with a high near 81°, light winds. Overnight lows near 59°, clear skies.
Baltimore Metro
Baltimore City & County, Harford, Howard, Anne Arundel: High around 84°, sunny after any early clouds clear, a brief 9% chance of a shower/isolated storm around the frontal passage late morning into midday. West winds 2-12 mph, gusty at times. Tonight mostly clear and comfortable, low near 64° — a great night to leave the AC off and crack a window.
DC Suburbs
Montgomery & Prince George’s Counties: Sunny with a high around 82°, an 8% chance of a stray shower as the front slides through late morning. West winds 3-12 mph. Clear and pleasant tonight, low near 62°.
Southern Maryland
Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s Counties: High near 84°, sunny, only a 9% shower chance tied to the frontal passage. West winds 5-9 mph. Overnight low near 63°, clear — comfortable for anyone with plans on the water this evening.
Upper Eastern Shore
Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline Counties: Mostly sunny, high around 83°, an 11% shower chance mainly in the morning as leftover moisture clears. West winds 5-10 mph. Tonight clear and mild, low near 67°.
Lower Eastern Shore
Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset Counties: This is the corner still mopping up overnight showers and a thunder rumble or two before daybreak (40% overnight, per the gridpoint, tapering fast). By daytime, mostly sunny, high near 84°, lingering shower chance down to 11%. West winds 3-10 mph. Overnight low near 64°, clearing out nicely.
Ocean City & The Coast
Worcester County wakes up to the tail end of overnight showers/storms (41% chance overnight, per the gridpoint) before clearing to mostly sunny, high in the lower 80s (around 82°). Southwest winds around 9 mph. Per the Wakefield surf forecast: surf around 2 feet, rip current risk low, water temperature in the mid 70s, UV index very high — reapply the sunscreen. Low tide at the Ocean City Fishing Pier is 10:27 AM, high tide 5:10 PM. Tonight clear and comfortable, low near 68°.
Active Hazards
No active watches, warnings, or advisories for Maryland as of this writing. The Coastal Flood Advisory that covered Annapolis (MDZ014) overnight for elevated tidal anomalies has expired as of 6 AM. Havre de Grace and a couple of other sensitive spots came close during the high tide cycle but the advisory was not expanded. As the front pushes through today, those tidal anomalies should drop, easing any further coastal flood concern for the next several days.
Severe & Flooding Threat
Low overall. Ahead of the front early this morning, some lingering showers over southeast Pennsylvania/Delmarva were riding into a modestly unstable airmass, and Mount Holly’s discussion flagged that an isolated strong-to-severe storm couldn’t be entirely ruled out through daybreak, mainly along and east of the I-95 corridor. That threat fades fast as the front clears the state by midday. No flooding concerns — rainfall amounts are light and the ground isn’t primed for runoff issues.
Heat, Humidity & Winds
This is the pleasant surprise of the forecast: dewpoints crash behind the front, falling from the muggy 60s into the 50s across the interior by afternoon and evening. It’ll feel genuinely dry for Maryland in August. Winds are the story today — west-to-northwest at 10-20 mph with gusts, strongest across the central and northern counties and over the open Bay waters during the afternoon. Boaters should expect a bumpy chop on the Chesapeake, though nothing reaching Small Craft Advisory criteria.
Chesapeake Bay & Marine
Winds swing out of the west-northwest through Tuesday, generally sub-advisory, though a few gusts near 18 knots are possible on the open Bay, especially north of the Bay Bridge during afternoon hours. No Small Craft Advisory is expected today. That changes later in the week as a southerly channeling event develops ahead of the next front — something to watch for boaters planning midweek trips.

Looking Ahead
Monday: A carbon copy of Sunday afternoon — sunny, dry, and comfortable, with highs mostly in the upper 70s to low-mid 80s statewide and very low humidity behind high pressure building in from the Appalachians. Tuesday: More of the same, sunny and dry with highs climbing a touch, upper 60s to low 80s depending on elevation. The dry, comfortable stretch holds until a warm, tropical airmass surges back in by Wednesday, bringing rising humidity and reintroducing thunderstorm chances by Thursday as a shortwave trough tracks in from the Great Lakes — worth keeping an eye on for any outdoor plans late in the week.
Data: NWS Baltimore/Washington, Mount Holly & Wakefield.
