Clouds Linger, Warm-Up Builds — Tuesday, Sept 29

Good morning, Maryland. The nor’easter that soaked and buffeted us all weekend is finally packing up and heading out to sea — per both NWS Baltimore/Washington (issued 3:58 AM) and NWS Mount Holly (3:48 AM), it’s now sitting over the Gulf of Maine, weakening as it goes. What’s left behind is a lid of clouds wrapping around that departing low, keeping today mostly cloudy with a few breaks, and temperatures held a touch in check even as the pattern turns the corner toward a genuine, multi-day warm-up. No rain of consequence is expected — models hint at maybe a stray sprinkle this afternoon, but any moisture is too shallow to amount to real precipitation.

Timing at a Glance

• Early morning (now–9 AM): Overcast to mostly cloudy statewide, leftover moisture from the departed nor’easter. A few patchy fog spots possible in any brief clearing, especially southern Maryland.
• Midday–afternoon: Clouds persist with occasional breaks of sun; can’t rule out an isolated sprinkle, mainly under any thicker patches as instability ticks up beneath the departing upper trough. Nothing that should interrupt outdoor plans.
• Evening: Skies start to thin out as surface ridging noses in.
• Overnight: Clearing continues; with clearer skies and light winds, patchy fog is possible again, especially in typical fog-prone valleys and near the Bay — though coverage is uncertain.

Western Maryland

Garrett County (Deep Creek/Oakland): High near 65°, areas of fog early giving way to mostly cloudy skies, winds light out of the west. Overnight low around 49° with patchy fog — grab a jacket if you’re out at Deep Creek this evening.
Allegany County (Cumberland): High around 74° under mostly cloudy skies, calm winds. Low near 54° tonight with partly cloudy skies turning to patchy fog toward dawn.

Northern & Central Maryland

Washington County (Hagerstown): High near 73°, mostly cloudy, light northwest wind. Low around 56° overnight, partly cloudy with late patchy fog.
Frederick County: High near 73°, mostly cloudy skies, calm winds. Low around 57° tonight.
Carroll County: Same story — high near 73°, mostly cloudy, dropping to near 57° overnight with a chance of late fog.

Baltimore Metro

Baltimore City & County: High near 75° under mostly cloudy skies, light northwest winds. Low near 61° tonight, partly cloudy.
Harford County: Tracking with the Baltimore metro grid — mid-70s high, low near 61°, mostly cloudy by day, partly cloudy overnight.
Howard County: High around 75°, mostly cloudy; overnight low near 61°.
Anne Arundel County: High near 75°, mostly cloudy skies off the Bay; low around 61° tonight with a light northwest breeze.

DC Suburbs

Montgomery County: High near 73°, mostly cloudy, northwest winds around 5 mph. Low near 58° tonight, partly cloudy with patchy late fog.
Prince George’s County: Essentially the same profile — high near 73°, mostly cloudy, low near 58° overnight.

Southern Maryland

Charles, Calvert & St. Mary’s Counties: High near 73°, mostly cloudy skies, light west-northwest wind. Low near 58-60° tonight, partly cloudy. Some patchy fog possible in low-lying spots near the Patuxent and Potomac this morning, as already noted at St. Inigoes.

Upper Eastern Shore

Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot & Caroline Counties: High near 75°, partly sunny — probably the best-looking sky of the mainland today. Winds light out of the northwest. Low near 60° tonight, partly cloudy.

Lower Eastern Shore

Dorchester, Wicomico & Somerset Counties: High near 75°, mostly cloudy, west winds 2 to 7 mph. Low near 60° overnight, partly cloudy trending to patchy fog toward daybreak Wednesday.

Ocean City & the Coast

Worcester County: High in the lower 70s (around 72°), partly sunny, west winds around 5 mph. Low near 63° tonight, partly cloudy. At the beach: surf around 2 feet, rip current risk low, water temperature around 70°, UV index moderate. High tide at the Ocean City Fishing Pier at 9:55 AM, low tide at 4:19 PM. Pleasant beach day, nothing dangerous in the water today.

Active Hazards

Good news for once: there are no active watches, warnings, or advisories for Maryland this morning. The Hazardous Weather Outlook from NWS Baltimore/Washington explicitly notes no hazardous weather is expected today or tonight. Note that a Coastal Flood Advisory remains posted for parts of New Jersey and Delaware’s back bays as residual tidal effects from the nor’easter linger there — but that advisory does not extend into Maryland waters or the Ocean City coast.

Severe & Flooding

None expected. With the nor’easter well offshore and only shallow, disorganized moisture left overhead, there’s no flooding or severe threat anywhere in Maryland today. The next several days remain dry as high pressure takes firm control.

Heat, Humidity, Winds & the Bay

Nothing extreme today — temperatures run close to seasonal norms to start, in the low-to-mid 70s for most of the state, with winds light and generally out of the northwest. On the Chesapeake Bay and tidal Potomac, expect light winds today turning more southerly as high pressure slides through — a quiet day for boaters, with only a modest pickup in southerly flow arriving by Thursday (gusts near 20 knots possible over open Bay waters Thursday night).

Looking Ahead

The real story starts Wednesday: high pressure builds in fully, skies clear out (patchy morning fog possible, especially western MD), and highs jump into the upper 70s to low 80s statewide — even the mountains climb into the 70s. Thursday goes a step further, with widespread 80s and some spots, especially Cumberland, flirting with the upper 80s. It’ll be the warmest stretch we’ve seen in weeks. That well-above-normal warmth holds into Friday, with highs again reaching the mid-80s to near 90 at lower elevations under increasing clouds as a cold front approaches from the northwest — a few showers can’t be ruled out in far western Maryland Friday afternoon. Beyond that, confidence drops fast: the front’s exact timing and strength through the weekend remain very uncertain, with rain chances trending higher Sunday and temperatures likely settling back toward or below normal behind it early next week. We’ll keep tightening that up as we get closer.
