Good morning. The last of an overnight low-pressure system is exiting northeast Maryland into Delaware as of this writing, leaving behind some patchy stratus and fog that should burn off by mid-morning. Today turns hot and sticky ahead of a cold front — per NWS Baltimore/Washington (issued 3:57 AM) and NWS Mount Holly (3:16 AM), highs push into the upper 80s to near 90 with a few afternoon and evening storms possible before the front finally clears us out tonight. It won’t be a washout day, but keep half an eye on the sky this afternoon.

Timing At a Glance

  • Early morning (now–9 AM): Lingering showers/patchy fog wrapping up in western MD and along the I-95 corridor; skies gradually clearing from west to east.
  • Mid-morning to midday: Stratus lifts, sun breaks out, winds turn northwest 5–10 mph, humidity builds back in.
  • Afternoon (2–6 PM): Peak heat and instability. Scattered showers and a few gusty thunderstorms possible, especially over central and western MD, ahead of an approaching cold front.
  • Evening (6–10 PM): Best window for any stronger storm as the front itself approaches — isolated wind gusts 35–50 mph can’t be ruled out, mainly west/central MD.
  • Overnight: Front pushes through, showers and storms taper off, drier and noticeably less humid air filters in behind it.

Western Maryland

Garrett County (Deep Creek / Oakland): High around 76° — cooler than the rest of the state, with a good chance (70%) of showers and thunderstorms lingering through the day and into tonight (75%). Winds west 9 mph. A Special Weather Statement is in effect for western and eastern Garrett this morning — see Hazards below. Low tonight near 62°.

Allegany County (Cumberland): High 87°, partly sunny becoming a 40% chance of showers/storms this afternoon. Winds light out of the west. The same Special Weather Statement covers extreme western Allegany. Low tonight around 66° with a lingering slight storm chance (24%).

Northern & Central Maryland

Washington County (Hagerstown): High near 89°, partly sunny with just a slight chance (24%) of a stray storm late day. Low tonight 68°.

Frederick County: High 88°, mostly sunny with a slight chance (21%) of a storm creeping in during the afternoon/evening. Overnight low 70° with a lingering 20% storm chance early, then clearing.

Carroll County: Sharing Frederick’s grid — high near 88°, same slight storm chance this afternoon, low around 70° overnight.

Baltimore Metro

Baltimore City & County: High 90° — the hottest reading on the board for central Maryland today, mostly sunny with a 16% chance of a late-day storm. Muggy with dew points climbing into the 70s. Low tonight 73°, with a slightly better (24%) storm chance overnight as the front nears.

Harford County: Riding the same central Maryland grid — high near 90°, same slight PM storm chance, low near 73°.

Howard County: High around 90°, mostly sunny turning slight chance storms late; low 73° with lingering storm chance overnight.

Anne Arundel County: High near 90°, humid, slight storm chance (16-24%) afternoon into evening; low 73°.

DC Suburbs

Montgomery County: High 88°, mostly sunny with a slight (21%) chance of a storm this afternoon/evening. Low tonight 71°, storm chance lingers into the evening (24%) before clearing.

Prince George’s County: Sharing the Silver Spring grid — high 88°, same timing and chances, low 71°.

Southern Maryland

Charles County: High around 90°, mostly sunny with a slight (17%) storm chance later in the day. Low tonight 72° with an increasing (up to 29%) storm chance overnight as the front works through.

Calvert County (Prince Frederick): High 90°, same setup — slight storm chance this afternoon, better odds tonight (29%). Low 72°.

St. Mary’s County: High near 90°, humid with a slight PM storm chance, low 72° overnight with a chance of storms lingering into the night.

Upper Eastern Shore

Cecil County: Heavy downpours were exiting into Delaware early this morning; skies clear out through the day. High near the upper Shore’s 89° benchmark, partly sunny, low storm chance (11%) as the front’s energy has mostly moved offshore. Low tonight 74° with a 24% chance of a stray evening storm.

Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline Counties: High near 89°, partly sunny, quiet for most of the day with only an 11% storm chance. Low tonight 74°, similar slight chance (24%) of a shower or storm overnight.

Lower Eastern Shore

Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset Counties: High near 90°, a lingering slight chance (16%) of a morning shower/storm clearing out to mostly sunny skies. Winds west around 9 mph. Low tonight 73°, with a better (30%) chance of showers and storms returning overnight.

Ocean City & The Coast

Worcester County / Ocean City: High around 86°, mostly sunny by afternoon after a chance (31%) of morning showers and storms clears through. Winds west 7-12 mph. Surf 2 to 3 feet, rip current risk low, UV index high — still worth reapplying sunscreen on the boards. Water temps in the mid 70s. High tide at the Ocean City Fishing Pier is 11:37 AM. Active Hazards

Special Weather Statement (Moderate): In effect this morning for Extreme Western Allegany, Western Garrett, and Eastern Garrett counties, tied to scattered shower activity lingering over the mountains. No watches or warnings are posted elsewhere in Maryland at this hour. A few Special Marine Warnings are possible this afternoon and evening on the Chesapeake Bay and tidal Potomac as storms move through — worth noting if you’re out on the water.

Severe & Flooding Threat

Confidence in widespread severe weather is low today. A couple of weak mid/upper-level waves cross the region this afternoon, riding along the northern edge of better instability, and could squeeze out a few gusty thunderstorms (35-50 mph gusts possible) mainly over central and western Maryland. DCAPE is only marginal (400-600 J/kg), which limits the potential for strong downdraft winds — typically 600-800 J/kg is needed for that. The cold front itself crosses tonight, and a slight uptick in convective coverage is possible in the 6-10 PM window as low-level convergence increases, but overall the threat stays low with mainly some lightning and locally heavy downpours. Any lingering shower activity should wind down overnight behind the front.

Heat & Humidity

Dew points climb into the 70s today across central and southern Maryland, making for a properly muggy, sticky feel with highs near 90° in the Baltimore-DC corridor and Southern Maryland. It won’t be as extreme as areas farther south (where a Heat Advisory is posted), but it’ll feel every bit like mid-August. Relief comes Tuesday behind the front, when dew points drop into the 60s and the air finally feels more comfortable, even with similar high temperatures.

Winds & Chesapeake Bay

West winds around 5-10 mph today across the Bay region, briefly shifting more westerly this evening before turning north Tuesday behind the front. Marine interests should watch for a few Special Marine Warnings this afternoon and evening tied to the scattered storm activity — otherwise generally light and manageable conditions on the water through the week.

Overnight Lows By Zone

  • Western mountains: around 62°
  • Cumberland/Hagerstown: mid-to-upper 60s (66-68°)
  • Frederick/Carroll: around 70°
  • Baltimore/DC corridor: low 70s (71-73°)
  • Southern Maryland: around 72°
  • Eastern Shore: low-to-mid 70s (73-74°)
  • Ocean City: around 74°

Looking Ahead

Tuesday brings a noticeably drier, more comfortable day statewide as the cold front clears out — highs stay similar (mid-to-upper 80s for most, near 86° in Hagerstown, near 88° in Baltimore/DC) but dew points fall into the 60s, so it’ll actually feel pleasant for a change. Wednesday looks sunny and warm again with highs climbing back near 88-90° in central Maryland as southerly flow returns. Thunderstorm chances then return Wednesday night into Thursday as the next cold front approaches, with additional chances continuing into next weekend — some cooling to the 70s and 80s is possible by next weekend once that front clears the area.
