Morning Edition

Good morning. If you had to design a perfect late-August day on a whiteboard, you’d draw something close to today. NWS Baltimore/Washington (issued 3:36 AM) and NWS Mount Holly both have high pressure sliding into the region, and the result is sunshine wall-to-wall, lower humidity than we’ve had in a while, and highs mostly in the upper 70s to mid 80s. There’s essentially nothing to track weather-wise today — no watches, no warnings, no advisories anywhere in the state. Enjoy it, because Thursday’s thunderstorm chances are already on forecasters’ radar.

Timing at a Glance

  • Overnight → sunrise: Clear to mostly clear, cool and comfortable, low 50s in the mountains up to upper 60s at the coast.
  • Morning: Sunshine builds quickly, light westerly breeze, low humidity — about as pleasant as a Maryland morning gets.
  • Afternoon: Full sun, highs peak by 3-5 PM, gentle winds 5-10 mph with a few gusts near 18 mph possible, especially west of I-95.
  • Evening/tonight: Skies stay mostly clear, temps fall comfortably into the 50s-60s inland, mid-upper 60s at the shore.

Western Maryland

Garrett County (Deep Creek / Oakland): High near 67° — a genuinely crisp, mountain-fresh day, mostly sunny with a light west wind 7-12 mph. Overnight lows dip to around 52°, jacket weather on the porch at Deep Creek. Precip chance is basically nil (4%).

Allegany County (Cumberland): Sunny and warmer than the high country, high around 77° with a light west wind. Tonight settles to about 55° under mostly clear skies — comfortable sleeping weather with the windows open.

Northern & Central Maryland

Washington County (Hagerstown): Sunny, high around 80°, southwest wind 3-9 mph. Overnight low near 57° under mostly clear skies.

Frederick County & Carroll County: Sunny and dry, high near 80° with a light westerly breeze. Essentially zero rain chance. Tonight cools to about 58°, clear and comfortable — good grilling-then-stargazing weather.

Baltimore Metro

Baltimore City & County, Harford, Howard, Anne Arundel: Sunny skies, high near 84° with a west wind 2-10 mph (a few gusts possible). Rain chance is negligible at 3%. Overnight lows settle around 63° under mostly clear skies — a comfortable night for anyone still holding onto summer evenings on the water in Annapolis or the Inner Harbor.

DC Suburbs

Montgomery County & Prince George’s County: Sunny, high near 82°, light west wind 2-9 mph. Humidity stays low and pleasant. Tonight drops to around 61°, mostly clear — a rare comfortable night for the Beltway corridor this late in August.

Southern Maryland

Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s Counties: Sunny and warm, high around 84° with a light west wind 2-6 mph. Tonight cools to near 62°, mostly clear — good conditions for an evening on the Patuxent or Potomac waterfronts.

Upper Eastern Shore

Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline Counties: Sunny, high near 83° with light west winds under 5 mph. Overnight low around 64°, mostly clear — ideal conditions if you’re heading out on the Chester or Choptank.

Lower Eastern Shore

Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset Counties: Sunny, high around 84°, northwest wind 1-8 mph. Tonight settles near 62°, mostly clear with just a tiny (5%) chance of a stray shower that shouldn’t amount to much.

Ocean City & the Coast

Worcester County: Sunny at the beach, high in the lower 80s (around 80°), southwest wind 5-10 mph. Water temps sit in the mid 70s — comfortable swimming weather. Surf height is running around 2 feet, and NWS Wakefield rates the rip current risk as Low. UV Index is High, so don’t skip the sunscreen despite the mild feel. Tides at the Ocean City Fishing Pier: low at 11:21 AM EDT, high at 5:57 PM EDT. Tonight, an overnight slight chance of a passing shower (17%) is possible before clearing, with lows near 68°.

Active Hazards

There are no active watches, warnings, or advisories anywhere in Maryland as of this writing. The Chesapeake Bay, tidal Potomac, and I-95 corridor Hazardous Weather Outlook from NWS Baltimore/Washington explicitly states no hazardous weather is expected today or tonight. Enjoy the clean slate.

Severe & Flooding

None expected today. NWS Baltimore/Washington’s forecast discussion keeps severe and flooding threats off the table entirely through Tuesday, with attention turning toward a low-end (5-15%) severe threat Thursday afternoon/evening as a cold front approaches — mainly an isolated damaging wind concern, not a widespread setup. We’ll have plenty of time to detail that later in the week.

Heat, Humidity & Winds

This is the pick of the week on the comfort front. Dew points are running low, so today will feel every bit as pleasant as the thermometer suggests — no mugginess weighing things down. Winds stay light and westerly across most of the state, generally 5-10 mph with occasional gusts near 18 mph possible, especially west of I-95 and in the higher terrain. Nothing disruptive.

Chesapeake Bay & Marine

West to northwest winds prevail over Maryland’s tidal waters through Tuesday as high pressure builds in from the Ohio Valley — comfortable boating conditions with no small craft concerns. That changes by Wednesday evening as winds turn southerly and gusts approach small craft advisory thresholds ahead of a midweek cold front; we’ll flag that formally if NWS pulls the trigger.

Overnight Lows by Zone

Zone Low Tonight
Western Mountains (Garrett) ~50°
Cumberland/Hagerstown 55–57°
Frederick/Carroll ~58°
Baltimore/DC Corridor 60–63°
Southern Maryland ~62°
Eastern Shore 62–65°
Ocean City ~66–68°

Looking Ahead

Tuesday looks like a repeat performance statewide — sunny, dry, highs mostly in the low-to-mid 80s (mid-70s in Garrett, low 80s in Cumberland/Hagerstown), with comfortable humidity persisting. Wednesday stays mostly dry and pleasant through the day, but southwesterly flow starts pulling tropical moisture northward, nudging highs toward the upper 80s to near 90 in spots (Cumberland 85°, Baltimore/DC area near 87°) with dew points climbing into the low-to-mid 60s. A weak disturbance could spark a few showers or storms Wednesday night into Thursday morning across Frederick/Carroll, Southern Maryland, and the Eastern Shore. Thursday itself turns more humid ahead of an approaching cold front, with a low-end severe risk (mainly isolated gusty winds) in the afternoon/evening as that front sweeps through.

Data: NWS Baltimore/Washington, Mount Holly & Wakefield.

MDWA will be back this evening with an update — but if today’s forecast holds, you may not even need one. Get outside. — MD Weather Alerts
