Evening / Overnight Edition
Monday, August 24, 2026 — 7:30 PM Update

Tonight is about as low-key as August gets in Maryland, and after the stickier stretches we’ve had, that’s a gift. NWS Baltimore/Washington (issued 3:14 PM) and NWS Wakefield (2:30 PM) both point to the same story: a dry, dome-shaped area of high pressure is settling in, dew points have crashed into the 50s and low 60s, and clear skies overnight will let radiational cooling do its thing. The one wrinkle — some patchy fog developing late in the Potomac Highlands as winds go light and cool air pools in the valleys. Otherwise, quiet.

No active watches, warnings, or advisories are in effect anywhere in Maryland tonight. That’s rare enough to say twice.

Tonight’s Timeline

  • 7–9 PM: Clearing skies statewide, winds dropping off from the west/northwest. Still comfortable, low humidity.
  • 9 PM–Midnight: Temperatures fall quickly under clear skies and light wind — a proper radiational cooling setup. Patchy fog begins forming in the Potomac Highlands (Garrett/far western Allegany) as valley air settles and cools.
  • Midnight–5 AM: Coolest stretch of the night. Fog may thicken in western valleys and low-lying rural spots — give yourself a few extra minutes if you’re driving early in Garrett or Allegany counties before sunrise. Elsewhere, just a crisp, clear, quiet night.
  • 5–8 AM Tuesday: Patchy fog dissipates with sunrise; skies stay mostly clear to sunny as high pressure takes full control for the day.

On a night like this, there’s really no drama to manufacture — outside of that fog patch out west, it’s just a good night to leave a window cracked.

Region by Region

Western Maryland

Garrett County (Deep Creek/Oakland): Low near 50° — genuinely chilly for late August up on the plateau. Mostly clear, winds light out of the west dropping to near calm, patchy fog possible in the hollows toward dawn. Grab a light jacket if you’re out late around the lake.
Allegany County (Cumberland): Low around 55°, mostly clear, winds light and variable. Similar fog risk in low spots along the Potomac and its tributaries.

Northern & Central Maryland

Washington County (Hagerstown): Low around 57°, mostly clear, winds light from the west. A comfortable, dry night in the Cumberland Valley.
Frederick County: Low near 59°, mostly clear, light northwest breeze. Ideal sleeping weather.
Carroll County: Sharing Frederick’s gridpoint — low near 59°, clear and calm.

Baltimore Metro

Baltimore City & County: Low around 63°, mostly clear, light northwest wind. Downtown may hold a few degrees warmer thanks to the urban heat footprint, but overall a refreshing night.
Harford County: Same air mass — low near 63°, clear skies, calm winds.
Howard County: Also around 63°, quiet and clear.
Anne Arundel County: Low near 63° inland, water-moderated spots along the Bay running a touch milder. Clear and calm — good boating conditions on the Bay tonight with no marine hazards flagged.

DC Suburbs

Montgomery County: Low near 61°, mostly clear, light northwest wind — a genuinely crisp night for the DC suburbs in late August.
Prince George’s County: Sharing that same 61° low, clear skies, calm.

Southern Maryland

Charles County: Low around 62°, partly cloudy with a slight 7% chance of stray clouds/sprinkle risk overnight, essentially a non-event. Light northwest winds.
Calvert County: Same setup, low near 62°, partly cloudy, calm winds.
St. Mary’s County: Low near 62°, partly cloudy, light breeze off the Potomac/Bay confluence.

Upper Eastern Shore

Cecil County: Low in the low-to-mid 60s (nearest gridpoint 64°), mostly clear, light northwest breeze.
Kent County: Same regional low near 64°, clear and calm.
Queen Anne’s County: Around 64°, mostly clear.
Talbot County: Low near 64°, mostly clear skies over the Choptank.
Caroline County: Also near 64°, quiet and clear inland.

Lower Eastern Shore

Dorchester County: Low near 63°, partly cloudy, light northwest wind.
Wicomico County (Salisbury): Same 63° low, partly cloudy skies, calm winds.
Somerset County: Similar low-60s night, partly cloudy, light breeze.

Ocean City & the Coast

Worcester County / Ocean City: Mildest low in the state tonight at 67°, thanks to the ocean’s moderating touch, under mostly clear skies with light northwest-to-west winds. At the beach: surf around 2 feet, rip current risk is Low for Tuesday, water temps in the upper 70s — comfortable swimming if you’re up early. High tide at the Ocean City Fishing Pier is 6:07 AM, low tide 12:10 PM. UV index runs High by afternoon, so plan sun protection even though the air itself will feel pleasant.

Overnight Lows by Zone

Zone Low
Western Mountains (Garrett) ~50°
Cumberland/Hagerstown 55–57°
Frederick/Carroll ~59°
Baltimore/DC Corridor 61–63°
Southern Maryland ~62°
Eastern Shore 63–65°
Ocean City ~67°

Active Hazards

None. No watches, warnings, or advisories are active anywhere in Maryland as of this writing — including the Bay, tidal Potomac, and coastal waters. Enjoy the break.

Severe & Flooding Outlook

Nothing tonight or Tuesday. The atmosphere is capped by dry mid-level air and there’s no forcing mechanism anywhere near the state. Confidence is high for a quiet stretch through Tuesday night.

Heat, Humidity & Winds

Humidity is a non-issue tonight — dew points in the 50s to low 60s statewide mean the air will feel genuinely dry and pleasant, a rarity in late August. Winds are light out of the west/northwest, generally under 10 mph, dropping to near calm after dark. No marine hazards are posted for the Chesapeake Bay or tidal Potomac; boaters should see calm, comfortable conditions overnight.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday: Another gorgeous, dry day under the high. Highs run low-to-mid 80s across central Maryland (Baltimore/DC near 84–86°), upper 70s to lower 80s on the Shore, 70s in the mountains — sunny, low humidity, light northwest wind. A great outdoor day statewide.

Wednesday: The high slides offshore and southerly flow returns, nudging temperatures toward the upper 80s in central Maryland and the Shore, with humidity creeping back up. Most of the day stays dry, but late-day/evening shower and thunderstorm chances build across the Panhandle and central counties (highest near 25–47% from Hagerstown through Baltimore and DC by Wednesday night) as a warm front approaches ahead of Thursday’s more organized system. Keep an eye on Thursday, too — increasing showers and thunderstorms, some potentially strong, look likely as a cold front finally works through late in the day.

Data: NWS Baltimore/Washington, Mount Holly & Wakefield.
