Evening / Overnight Edition
Wednesday, October 14, 2026

Well, that was a day. Baltimore, DC, and points south flirted with or broke record highs this afternoon — think upper 80s pushing 90 — while a cold front drops south out of the Ohio Valley and starts shoving all that warmth out the door tonight. NWS Baltimore/Washington (2:52 PM), Mount Holly (2:59 PM), and Wakefield (3:23 PM) all have the same story: scattered showers and a few gusty thunderstorms move through this evening into tonight, mainly favoring areas west of US-15 and the mountains, before cooler, cloudier air settles in for Thursday.

⏱ Tonight’s Timeline

  • 5–8 PM: Showers and a few thunderstorms fire over the Western Maryland mountains (Garrett/Allegany) and into the eastern WV highlands as the front approaches.
  • 7–11 PM: Activity pushes southeast into the Baltimore/DC corridor and central Maryland. Coverage becomes more scattered and isolated east of I-95 — think hit-or-miss showers rather than a solid line.
  • Late evening into midnight: Front sags into Southern Maryland and the Bay, showers taper from west to east.
  • Overnight: Skies trend mostly cloudy behind the front with lingering shower chances, especially over the Eastern Shore as the boundary stalls nearby.

A Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather covers the mountains and areas west of US-15 this evening — damaging wind gusts and locally heavy downpours are the main concerns with any stronger cell, mainly from Oakland/Cumberland west and south. East of there, it’s more garden-variety showers with a rumble or two possible, weakening as they lose daytime heating.

🗺 Region by Region

Western Maryland — Garrett & Allegany

This is ground zero for tonight’s action. Garrett County (Deep Creek, Oakland) falls to a low around 56°, with showers and thunderstorms likely (77% chance) rolling through this evening — some could be strong with gusty winds. Allegany County (Cumberland) sees a similar setup, low around 57°, with a 52% chance of showers and storms as the front slides through during the evening commute and beyond. Wind stays light, generally N around 5-8 mph. Have the headlights on if you’re driving 68 or 220 after dark.

Northern & Central — Washington, Frederick, Carroll

Hagerstown (Washington Co.) drops to around 56° overnight with just a 27% chance of a lingering shower or rumble before clouds take over. Frederick and Carroll counties hit a sweltering 86° this afternoon before falling back to around 57° tonight, with a 28% chance of a stray shower/storm early, trending to mostly cloudy skies. Winds light out of the north, 3-9 mph.

Baltimore Metro — City/County, Harford, Howard, Anne Arundel

Baltimore baked to 87° this afternoon — right at or near record territory — before the front arrives. Tonight’s low settles around 60° with a 32% chance of showers and a few thunderstorms, mainly in the evening hours, shifting to a broader chance overnight as the front stalls nearby. Winds northwest, 5-8 mph, helping usher in slightly drier, cooler air by daybreak.

DC Suburbs — Montgomery & Prince George’s

Another near-record afternoon at 86°, with Montgomery and Prince George’s counties cooling to around 59° tonight. Shower and thunderstorm chances run 29% this evening, trending down late. Light north winds, 3-8 mph. The Beltway commute home should stay dry for most, with maybe a passing sprinkle.

Southern Maryland — Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s

Lows around 60° tonight with skies trending mostly cloudy and just a 16% chance of a late shower. This zone stays mostly on the drier side of tonight’s activity, with the main rain chances arriving Thursday instead. Light northwest wind, 3-10 mph.

Upper Eastern Shore — Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Caroline

Lows near 60° with a 22% chance of a stray shower or storm this evening as outflow from the mainland activity drifts across the Bay. Northwest winds 5-15 mph. Should be a quieter night here than west of the Bay.

Lower Eastern Shore — Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset

Milder overnight, lows around 62°, mostly partly cloudy with only an 11% shower chance. Light northwest wind, 2-9 mph. The calmest corner of the state tonight.

Ocean City & the Coast — Worcester

Partly cloudy tonight, low around 62°, winds northwest 5-15 mph, and just a 12% shower chance — essentially a quiet beach night. No current beach hazards statement is posted for tonight (last advisory on the books was from earlier in the week), but always check the latest rip current guidance before any water activity, since onshore flow builds again later in the week.

⚠️ Active Hazards

No active watches, warnings, or advisories are posted for Maryland at this hour. The one hazard worth flagging: a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms this evening across far Western Maryland (Garrett and Allegany counties) and areas west of US-15, with damaging wind gusts and locally heavy rain the primary concerns with any stronger cell. This is an outlook from the Storm Prediction Center, not a formal NWS warning — but it’s the headline weather risk for tonight.

🌩 Severe & Flooding Potential

Instability (CAPE 600-900 j/kg) combined with decent shear (35-45 kt effective bulk shear) supports a few organized storms this evening, mainly from Romney/Cumberland west to Oakland and south toward the WV line. Any storm that forms has the potential for damaging wind gusts and locally heavy downpours, though coverage becomes more isolated as you head east and instability fades after sunset. No widespread flooding is expected — this is more of a quick-hit, gusty-wind-and-heavy-rain risk than a prolonged soaker.

💧 Heat, Winds & Bay/Marine

Today’s heat was the real headline — Dulles, Reagan National, and BWI all flirted with or broke daily record highs near 88-90°, a full 10-15° above average for mid-October. That warmth breaks tonight behind the front, and humidity drops a notch as drier air filters in through Thursday. Winds stay generally light across the mainland tonight (under 15 mph), but keep an eye on the Chesapeake — no advisories are posted for Maryland bay waters tonight, though coastal waters off the Eastern Shore and Ocean City could see building breeze and seas as we head toward Thursday and especially Friday’s stronger frontal passage.

🌙 Overnight Lows by Zone

Zone Low
Western Mountains (Garrett) ~56°
Cumberland/Hagerstown 56–57°
Frederick/Carroll ~57°
Baltimore/DC Corridor 59–60°
Southern Maryland ~60°
Eastern Shore 60–62°
Ocean City ~62°

📅 Looking Ahead

Thursday: Much cooler and cloudier statewide, with highs only in the low-to-mid 60s almost everywhere — a 20+ degree drop from today in many spots. On-and-off rain showers likely through the day (60-75% chances across most of the state) as the front stalls nearby and wedge high pressure keeps things damp and raw-feeling. Bring the jacket you packed away.

Friday: Temperatures rebound sharply — upper 70s to low-mid 80s — ahead of a second, stronger cold front. That front brings a squeeze of gusty showers and a few thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening, with wind gusts potentially 30-45 mph (highest in the mountains), and a Marginal Risk for severe weather mainly east of US-15 toward the I-95 corridor. This sets the stage for a sharp temperature crash into the weekend, with widespread frost and near-freezing temperatures possible Saturday night into Sunday night, especially west of I-95.

Data: NWS Baltimore/Washington, Mount Holly & Wakefield.
